And the man of the world said unto his brother, “The lamp must have shown Aladdin a great treasure. The will and strength enough to grant three wishes to any man.”

The brother, a scientific man, said unto the man of the world, “This is nonsense, it was simply a lamp. Perhaps a poison of some kind, causing temporary madness. Aladdin simply made good on a hallucination.”

Their neighbor, a nihilist, replied, “It’s just a goddamn lamp. No spirits, no plants, no willpower. Nothing matters, apart from the feats Aladdin accomplished.”

Another neighbor,a shopkeeper joins and says, “Allah must have come to show him the way. Perhaps he sent a warrior of the spirit to grant him great focus and clemency, providing the faith to create miracles. Allah be praised for this.”

A small child, asked “But the story speaks of a Genie. Why does it have to be anything else, but what the story says? How it was told by Aladdin himself? Do you not trust him?”

The men laughed and patted his head, telling him to sit down with his foolishness.

The wisest, and the quietest among them finally spoke, much to their surprise. Removing his long pipe from his lips, he blew smoke from his mouth, and caught the  boy by the chest as the others shooed him away.

Kneeling before him, he stood out of view of the other men, and removed a small, shiny object from his robes.

It was a small, shabby lamp.

The pipe smoking man moved his eyes from the shadow to look at him.

“And who is it that says, these things cannot all be true?” he asked, tucking the lamp into the boy’s robes.
